Healthcare Data & Delivery Science Research Practicum

Fast-track your research proposal or project with personalized support from expert faculty in this 4-month intensive. This course is suitable for individuals with an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree who have completed either Applied Data Science and Observational Research Skills or Applied Intervention and Implementation Research Skills. To be admitted into this course, you must have a proposal submission or project plan and a letter of support from your primary mentor.

  • Commitment: 10 hours/week

  • Credits: 3 credits

 

By the end of this course, you will develop a peer-reviewed polished research strategy or project narrative. 

 

Program components:

  • step-by-step assignments to guide you in developing your proposal or project

  • two 1:1 meeting with a faculty mentor

  • a 1:1 consultation with a biostatistician

  • six peer feedback sessions 

  • five interactive webinars for research career development

  • a scientific mock peer review section of your proposal or project

 

Step-by-step assignments to develop your research strategy or project narrative:

  1. Describe your research problem, research question, and significance

  2. Develop a one-page research summary and specific aims

  3. Revise one-page research summary and specific aims

  4. Draft your research approach

  5. Draft and refine your analytic plan and section on your study limitations

  6. Complete full draft of your specific aims and research narrative

  7. Revise and submit your final specific aims and research narrative for mock review

 

Webinar topics:

  1. Overview of research proposal development process and working with your mentor and peer group

  2. Funding landscape (foundation vs federal)

  3. Developing your professional network (including mentor relationships)

  4. How to build resilience (balance work/life) while being a clinician researcher

  5. Building and managing a research team (staff-faculty)
